Roy Fielding Director of Aquatics for the University of North Carolina Charlotte has been named one of the outstanding aquatic leaders in the United States of America for the year 2003. The Who’s Who in Aquatics will be presented in the February 2004 Issue of Aquatics International Magazine. The list contains directors and executives from more thirty-three national organizations, current and former Olympic swimming and diving coaches, educators, and others from manufacturing to consulting in aquatics. This is the first year anyone from North or South Carolina has received this award.
Roy is the developer of The Pool Professor software. The software is being used worldwide to assist pool operators to make their pools easier and safer to operate, http://www.thepoolprofessor.com. He has been a volunteer for the American Red Cross in aquatics for more than 35 years. Recently he was part of collaborative effort with the American Red Cross, YMCA of America, and United States Lifesaving Association to see what these organizations can do together for the greater good of aquatic safety. Roy set to work to develop a database/survey for the aquatics incidents to be used on a national level. He was also very instrumental in the drive to develop the new American Red Cross Lifeguard Management Course. Roy said; “We have done a good job of training lifeguards over the years, but there was still a piece missing. Lifeguard Management is the key to make sure the lifeguards are given the right tools and direction to do their very important job correctly.”
The year 2003 has him start his twenty sixth year of teaching and directing aquatics at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Roy was elected the president of the Piedmont Diving and Rescue Association. The PDRA is one of largest not-for-profit recreational scuba diving organizations in the country. The organization has close to 1000 members and owns three properties for the membership to use. Early in the year he was part of a group finishing up work started the previous year on the new American Red Cross Lifeguard Management course which contains a manual, DVD, cd-rom, and video as part of the package. The spring of 2003 was also spent teaching Certified Pool Operator classes across the state of North Carolina under the guidelines of the National Swimming Pool Foundation. The Pool Professor software has been his dream since first playing games on a computer back in the late eighties. Currently there is work on a new version to expand the capabilities of the Pool Professor Version 3.5 to meet the every changing market place.
“I feel very honored to be even nominated let alone selected as one the top 100 in aquatics. This group of 100 and many many others works on a daily basis to make aquatics in America a safer and fun place for all to enjoy”
